Billerica HDC Approves Cumming Street Porch Repair, Requires White Balusters

Billerica's Historical District Commission unanimously approved a front porch repair at 8 Cumming Street on August 5, clearing a structural reconstruction project the owners said could not wait another winter. The commission voted 7 to 0 to approve the plan, which calls for demolishing and rebuilding the sinking deck on proper footings while preserving the existing slate porch roof and maintaining the same dimensions, but commissioners attached a condition requiring the applicants to swap out black metal balusters shown in the contractor's rendering for white, square composite balusters more in keeping with the property's period character. Member Mike Ray said the black metal option was "certainly not period appropriate," and every other member echoed that view before the motion carried.
