Lorax Committee adopts tree bylaw for warrant
LORAX · Meeting of September 17, 2026
Billerica's Lorax Committee finalizes its tree preservation bylaw, cutting the proposed fine to $300. Meeting Thursday, the committee accepted Town Counsel's recommendation to lower the penalty from $500 after being told state law caps such local fines at $300. Member Chris Trebu said "the only thing that Town Council really said was that the fine should be around 300 instead of 500." The bylaw will become Article 27 of the General Bylaws if adopted, and members voted unanimously to send it to the fall Town Meeting warrant, where it currently sits as article 41.
Finalized language is due to the Town Manager's Office by 4 p.m. Monday, September 21. Members also noted former tree warden David Peterson was promoted rather than removed, and discussed seeking a "time certain" slot so the new tree warden can attend when the article comes up.
The meeting adjourned at 6:38 p.m.
