Billerica Open Space Panel Eyes Pinedale Wetlands for Conservation Protection

BILLERICA — January 6, 2026 — Billerica's Open Space and Recreation Planning Committee identified more than 50 town-owned parcels in the Pinedale neighborhood as a priority for conservation protection at its January 6 meeting. Chair Michael Roser and member Justin Damon presented GIS mapping showing a significant undocumented tributary to the Shawsheen River running through the area, entirely unrecognized in the town's current stream records. Damon argued that placing the parcels under conservation restriction — a step staff said provides protections equivalent to a state Article 97 designation — would guard a dense wildlife corridor and provide flood mitigation in one of Billerica's most built-up neighborhoods. The committee also weighed a MassDOT Shared Streets and Spaces bicycle rack grant covering 16 public locations with a January 9 deadline, and confirmed that a trail-mapping project has been submitted to regional planning agency NMCOG for GIS technical assistance.
