Billerica Acting Town Manager Spotlights Assessing Office and Senior Tax Programs

BILLERICA — July 1, 2025 — Billerica acting town manager uses weekly video address to promote senior tax-deferral program and July 3 cookout. Acting Town Manager Chris Dillon introduced Chief Assessor John Spadel on the July 1 Town Hall Weekly to explain how the Assessing Department values the town's more than 15,000 parcels through an annual revaluation process and administers relief programs for seniors, veterans, widows, and blind residents. Spadel said more than 400 veterans currently receive exemptions, and qualifying seniors can receive $1,000 off their tax bills, but the department's tax-deferral program — which allows eligible seniors to stop paying property taxes entirely — has only two participants. "I think it's the best program we offer," Spadel said. "But nobody really takes advantage of it." Dillon also announced that town offices will be closed July 4 and that the 250th Celebration Committee will hold a community cookout and bike rodeo on the town common starting at 5 p.m. on July 3.
