BILLERICA --

TOWN

At the Sept. 29 Finance Committee meeting, school officials discussed repairs to the track at the Locke school, where contractors found cracking they believe is caused by water washing out the pavement base beneath the rubber surface. The planned fix covers about 30 linear feet of the track's first lane, nearest the turf, and would require closing that section; officials said the work could not be done until next summer because the affected area sits outside the active running lane. The resurfacing carries a five-year warranty on the rubber membrane and a one-year warranty on workmanship, per the discussion.

YOUTH LEAGUES

Billerica Youth Basketball held travel tryouts for fifth and seventh grade girls and fourth and seventh grade boys on Sept. 28 and Oct. 2 at Parker Elementary and Marshall Middle School. The schedule continues with eighth grade boys sessions Oct. 5 and Oct. 9 at Marshall. The organization's registration for the 2026-27 season runs through Oct. 31 with a $245 fee ($135 for Kindergarten Basketball); players registered by that date are guaranteed a roster spot, with later signups placed on a waiting list. Evaluations for the grades 5-8 in-house program are expected in late October or early November, with the season starting on or after Nov. 1.

The Billerica Hockey Association's online schedule showed games and skills sessions this week across its Mite, Squirt, Peewee, Bantam and Midget divisions, including home matchups against programs from Methuen, Wilmington, Chelmsford and Greater Lowell.
