Billerica School Committee opened the year reviewing a districtwide safety training overhaul and roughly $634,284 in federal ESSA grants. The committee accepted a consent agenda including $4,000 for Billerica Memorial High School football from alumnus Shawn Glavin and $2,500 for a Dutile Elementary "comfort corner." Administrators detailed a two-day staff training with the I Love You Guys Foundation covering the Standard Response Protocol and a reunification method, practiced with roughly 70 staff, police and fire personnel at Marshall Middle School. The superintendent said the new personal device policy has students "talking to each other" in hallways again.
The Massachusetts School Building Authority will visit Locke Middle School September 22, and state Commissioner of Education Pedro Martinez tours Billerica Memorial High School September 23. The committee also sought $150,000 in state Fair Share Act funds for classroom projectors.
